Ladies tights are one fashion item that never actually goes out of fashion. Fashions change regularly but tights will remain a constant in many women’s wardrobes, in some form or another. Since the inception of nylon in the 1930s, followed by the widespread manufacture of nylons in the 1960s women have become reliant on tights for comfortable yet affordable leg coverings for everyday wear.

Nylon became an affordable alternative to silk but nowadays the further advancement of technology means tights and stockings are made from many affordable and comfortable materials. The addition of Lycra helps to stop tights going baggy and getting wrinkles at the ankles, which was a problem for ladies during the 1950’s! We’ve even taken things one step further and now wear shaping hosiery, there are whole ranges of body shaping tights available to tone and shape all our wobbly bits, like bums, tums and legs.

A common material for winter tights is wool, as it keeps you warm and cosy, and comes in lots of different colours. Stay warm but stylish during the winter by wearing wool tights, especially some of the gorgeous wool tights in really current colours such as deep reds and purples.

When the weather warms up a little but you still like to keep your legs covered good, old-fashioned opaque tights always do the trick. A long way from the days of sheer nylons, opaque tights have been a must-have for many women for the last few decades. They come in many different colours and varying deniers.

The denier is the measure of thickness of the weave of the material that the tights are made from – whether that is nylon, silk, cotton, wool or whatever - and the higher the denier the thicker the tights. Opaque tights are generally 40 denier or higher, while sheer tights range from 5 to 30 denier, and often have reinforced toes and gussets.

Sheer tights are made from many different materials also, as the denier is decided by the thickness of the weave and not the material they’re made from.

Whether your preference is opaque tights, support tights, sheer tights, footless tights, coloured tights, trendy wet look tights or even the latest suspender tights there are literally hundreds of different sorts of tights available to buy nowadays.

If you feel unsexy wearing tights there is always the option of hold ups or stockings. Hold ups and stockings are often worn by women for special occasions instead of tights as they do the same job but feel so much sexier. In the same way that ladies tights are available in a multitude of colours and different materials, you can also get stockings and hold ups to match every outfit.

Ladies tights are set to remain in the wardrobes of most women, as while our taste in colours and fashions may change, this staple item will remain in our hearts!
