You’ve spent the cash, so you definitely know felt cowboy hats are not cheap. Thus it is worthwhile to take good care of it. Correct care will not only help the hat last, you keep it appearing as good as it did the day you walked home from the shop.
Prevention is better than cure! Your goal needs to be to keep the hat from getting bent or filthy. It’s a good idea to clean your hands before picking it up. It’s not simple to clean a felt cowboy hat, so keep it clean to start with. The hat can really get damaged from too much cleaning.
It’s normal to want to pick up your hat by the crown. Do not do it. Always use the brim. You want your hat to maintain its shape, and using the top to pick up the hat will cause it to lose it’s shape earlier. The crown will be cleaner as well.
All cowboy hats should be stored in their own box. If that box has become misplaced, use a hat stand in its place. And to help the brim maintain it’s form, always place the hat down upside down.
Keep the hat away from big heat generators. This will cause the hat to not fit properly because the inside sweat band will shrink.
Don’t let the hat get soaked. If you are out in the rainfall, let it dry out carefully. The brim might need to be reshaped. Do not use a blower. Rather, let the hat dry out by itself. Turn the sweat band inside out. Then rest the hat on the sweat band. The hat will dry by itself. Then you can remold it into its proper form.
A little rainfall occasionally won’t hurt a well-made felt cowboy hat. But it will really be better if you use a hat cover for those moist days.
Whether you purchase felt, straw, or leather cowboy hats, it’s a great idea to protect your investment by taking particular care of it.
